Mission

What does SHARANYA mean?

“Sharanye tryambake devi narayani namostute” Shlokha translates to,“Lord Durga, the salvager, the liberator, the one who fulfills our desires, the one who helps us to achieve righteousness, I surrender myself to you.”
“SHARANYA” is a Sanskrit word, which means – Protector and Giver of Refuge.

Our institution is a place that provides physical, mental, and emotional & spiritual refuge to people suffering from life-limiting illnesses and are at a stage of beyond cure. Prof. Sri Krishna Murthy suggested that the word Sharanya gives complete meaning to our aim and vision.

Aims & Objectives

TO REDUCE OR MINIMIZE PAINS AND SUFFERINGS OF THE DISEASE. (PAIN & PALLIATIVE CARE)

Patients of advanced and critical illness of cancer and other chronic diseases will have pains and sufferings. Many a time adverse effects of the disease and medicine will induce un- tolerable pains and causes sufferings inside and outside the body. This will impact on food intake, muscle and body pains, stomach ache, constipation and vomiting etc.

The primary objective is to control or minimize these effects and to bring the patient back to normal situation. But it does not mean the disease is being cured. It is only an effort to minimize the pains and sufferings.

TO PROVIDE A CONTINUOUS CARE :

Providing a continuous care round the clock is an essential part of patient’s health. The patient who is already suffering from chronic disease will have different problems and it will be reflected at different times. Many patients will be advised for periodic medication like 3rd hourly/4th hourly etc. Thus continuous monitoring is important and need of observation round the clock is very much essential

TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE :

Quality of life has more impact on patients care at their advanced stage of illness. The patient’s earlier level of life style doesn’t matter a lot. But the best way they would be treated now plays a very important role.

Quality of life means the health condition, medication, place of living, required food, compassionate care and many more. A patient resting on a bed with a fan for comfortness is also a part of good quality of life.

MANAGING A PATIENT AT THE PROGRESSIVE STATE OF DECLINE :

During the time period of a patient’s progressive state of decline, drastic and frequent changes in the patient’s condition takes place. A problem which is being treated has got an impact on the symptom of some other health problem. This may affect other parts of the body too. This is a situation of continuous care and addressing symptoms of the disease which is also termed as Symptom Management. In this situation educative counselling on the progression of the disease which is more essential to both patient and their families.

TO PROVIDE PALLIATIVE CARE SERVICES TO MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PATIENTS POSSIBLE :

Palliative care service is a unique way of approaching the patients suffering from chronic illness. All the hospitals are equipped with curative treatments. But a very few centers are providing palliative treatments and services to advanced and critical patients. There is a vast need of this service to maximum number of patients.

DIGNITY OF LIFE :

Living in a dignified way is one of the important care in the palliative procedure. Dignity of a person does not exist in his/her wealth or social status. It is our intention to create an atmosphere such that, the patient should feel he/she is living comfortably even though he/she is helpless. He/she must be provided with proper accommodation, timely food and caring for their personal needs with proper medication.

SPIRITUAL CARE:

Arranging spiritual talks, positive motivational speeches, bhajans and songs will improve patients health and on their feelings. It helps to develop courage to face the situation and to accept the worst situation of the disease as it comes.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CARE :

Psychological care is provided by timely counseling and creating a positive environment. Generally a patient will have a negative feeling on medicines, medical treatment, god, society and also on their family. An effort is made to understand that nobody is responsible for the situation and when it happens, we have to accept the real truth of life.

SOCIAL CARE :

Social care is also an essential part of palliative care practice. A patient is more worried about his/her family responsibilities and ill feelings within them. An effort is made to bring them out of that situation by providing a moral support.

TO ELIMINATE LONELINESS AND PROVIDE A COMPASSIONATE ATMOSPHERE :

Loneliness is the devil of mind. Due to health illness of the patient neither the family members nor the outsiders are ready to spend time and hear their feelings. Every care taker and counseling staff has been trained to speak and hear the feelings of the patient. A compassionate attachment is developed with the patient to share their feelings and become pain free of their psychological sufferings.

Nakshatra Vana, also called Nakshatravanam or Nakshatravan.. It is associated with the Sringeri Sharada Peetham monastery, and consists of 27 trees that are related to 27 Nakshatras of Indian Astrology.

There are 12 trees representing the 12 astrological signs namely: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each sign occupies 30° of celestial longitude and roughly corresponds to the star constellations and all these trees are planted in the same pattern.

The rest of the trees are planted according to the solar system with the sun in the center. All these trees have a certain influence on the planets and zodiac signs with multiple benefits.

The grove also includes over 120 medicinal plants found in the Western Ghats. At Sharanya, we have built a Nakshatra Vana to not only help conserve nature but also create a peaceful environment for our patients and staff within the Sharanya’s campus.
